What are the Effects of Sugar and Alcohol on Your Skin

By Caris, Dermal Therapist

The consumption of sugar and alcohol increases our inflammation levels, causing skin dysfunctions like acne, premature aging, puffiness and dehydration. You can control inflammation and promote skin and overall health by reducing your alcohol intake and eating an anti-inflammatory diet.

Sugar:

  • Affects collagen and elastin production, causing premature aging.
  • Increases inflammation, which can cause breakouts and blemishes.
  • Psoriasis, rosacea, eczema and other skin disorders are aggravated.

Alcohol:

  • Dehydrates the body, resulting in dry, flaky skin and fine lines.
  • It causes redness and flushing of the skin by dilation of the blood vessels.
  • Causes your face to become puffy due to water retention.

You don’t have to completely eliminate it; a little bit in moderation is still fine for your skin. When it comes to your skin, the lower the intake, the lower the damage you will suffer. If you want to cut back, perhaps reduce to once or twice a week.

Why not book a complimentary skin and treatment planning session with our dermal therapist Caris, to discuss any skin concerns you may have, or perhaps start a new skincare regime to address these concerns?
